Is Social Bookmarking Dead?

Do you do a lot of social bookmarking?

Have you noticed that the effectiveness of it for backlinks has worn off?

I know I have – actually this is something that I’ve noticed for quite some time but now I am also hearing it from quite a few IM’ers that do a lot of testing and know a lot more than I do!

I’m not surprised, though because Social Bookmarking for the purposes of backlinking has been abused by internet marketers for years.   I’m sure you noticed that many of the SB sites now are “no follow”, therefore not very useful for backlinks.

It seems that the SE’s have fallen out of love with these sites for most of the hit and run back linking that we all love to do.

So, what’s it to you?

Well, if you have been relying on Social Bookmarking to give you link juice you can forget about it.  Maybe, bookmark a few select posts at some of the big sites like Digg, Reddit, Jupmtags etc…  if you feel like it but for getting backlinks you are better off spending your time on something else.

HOWEVER, Social Bookmarking can still be quite effective if you have something of interest that is going to “go viral” as they say.  If you have a great story or something funny or controversial, you can gain from a surge in traffic because a lot of people will be bookmarking and voting for your bookmark.

I don’t think Social Bookmarking will ever be “dead” but these days you need to use it the right way to gain any benefits.

I’d be interested in your thoughts and what you have seen recently with your own social bookmarking efforts so feel free to comment below!
