I’m sure I don’t need to tell you that keywords are the lifeblood of your internet business and getting a good keyword ranking for your targeted phrases is the goal of every webmaster. Finding keywords that get lots of searches is easy, but figuring out which ones you can rank for is another story all together.
Unfortunately, most people want an easy push button solution for doing a keyword search and finding out which keywords to “go for”. And who could blame them, I know that I personally would love to be able to just click a button and instantly find out which of my keywords I could get a page 1 Google ranking for easily, wouldn’t you?
Sure you would, and that’s probably what prompted someone to come up with the notion that you can judge the competitiveness of a keyword by simply typing your keyword phrase into Google inside the quotes and seeing how many sites come up.
I believe the current way of thinking is that if less than 10,000 pages come up – you should go for that keyword. I’m sorry to say, that if you follow this advice you are probably going to be sorry as most of your pages will not make it to where you want them to be in the SERPS.
Maybe you have already tried this and been disappointed when your website didn’t rank and only got a dribble of traffic?
I’m not surprised since this way of thinking has a huge flaw in it because it does not take into consideration the strength of the competition.
The fact that only 10,000 pages come up when you type your keyword in quotes is actually quite meaningless.
You could have only 500 pages come up with your keyword phrase on them, but if the top 10 of those are high PR authority pages with tons of backlinks, you don’t have a chance of getting onto page1.
On the other hand, there could be 20 million pages that have that keyword phrase in them but if none of them are optimizing for the phrase and if they have minimal back links then you could claim a top 3 spot easily. Think of all the high search keywords you might pass by if you used the “less than 10,000″ rule to determine your selection.
What you need to do in order to determine if your keywords will be easy to get a good keyword ranking for is look at the top ranking pages and analyze the strength of those pages in order to determine if you can beat them and claim a higher position.
I’ve boiled down the steps to analyzing the strength of those competing pages and I go over it extensively in my Blog Profit Mastery course – You will find videos on exactly how to do it yourself in week 1 of the course – CLICK HERE to find out more.
